That makes the PD4 particularly interesting for facilities teams, installers and maintenance staff who want to tackle short duct sections themselves, without hauling a large machine around. Lamers Reinigingstechniek from Zelhem, the Netherlands, supplies the PD4 and advises on the right brushes.

How does the PD4 duct cleaner work with a power drill?
The principle is simple. You clamp the PD4 shaft into a power drill, fit a brush of the right diameter at the other end and feed it into the duct. The drill makes the brush rotate, so dust and deposits come loose from the duct wall. You capture the loosened dirt with an extraction unit that keeps the duct section under negative pressure.
Because you use a drill you probably already own, the threshold is low. With a cordless drill you do not depend on a socket near the grille; with a mains model you do not have to watch for a flat battery. Which drill fits the PD4 best is something you can check with Lamers.

What the table shows in practice: the PD4 is a tool, not a machine with its own drive or electronics. That keeps it light and simple. Everything that determines the cleaning result sits in the choice of shaft length and brush.
When is duct cleaning with a PD4 the smart choice?
The short shaft makes the PD4 strong where runs are short and openings are close together. Eurovent recommends placing inspection openings no more than 10 metres apart. In buildings where that has been done properly, a 7.5 metre shaft used from both sides already gets you a long way.
- Extract from toilets and pantries: often short branches behind a valve.
- Branches to office rooms: the last stretch between the main duct and the grille.
- Hotel rooms: short extract ducts per bathroom. See bathroom extraction in hotels.
- Small plant rooms: where a large machine is hard to set down.
For long main ducts, vertical shafts or many bends in a row, the Danduct Clean DC4 duct cleaner is a better fit, with a reach of up to 30 metres.
PD4, PD5 and DC4 compared: which compact duct cleaner fits?
| Feature | PD4 | PD5 (for comparison) | DC4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive | Power drill | Power drill | Own motor, 230 volts |
| Duct size | Brushes 100 to 600 mm | 80 to 250 mm | 100 to 600 mm |

We only mention the PD5 to show the difference: thinner ducts, longer shaft. Lamers also has the PD2 in its range. No public specifications are known for it, so if you are unsure between the PD4 and the compact PD2 duct cleaning tool, ask for advice. The complete overview can be found under tools for cleaning air ducts.
Checklist: how to clean a short air duct with the PD4
- Measure the duct diameter and choose a brush of the same size.
- Choose the brush type based on the material. The EPA recommends soft brushes for fibreglass duct board and sheet metal. Danduct supplies soft, standard and Tynex.
- Remove the valve or grille. Milieu Centraal (Dutch public information centre) advises removing valves and cleaning them with soapy water.
- Seal other openings with foam caps and the duct section with a balloon.
- Create negative pressure with an extraction unit, with HEPA of 99.97 percent at 0.3 µm if the unit exhausts indoors.
- Clamp the shaft into the drill, feed in the brush and work through the run steadily.
- Check the result and record it, for example with photos or an inspection camera.
More on sealing and extraction can be found under sealing balloons and vent caps.
Tip for repeat work: keep a short list per building with the duct diameters and brush types you used. On the next round you take exactly the right brushes and save setup time.
Misconceptions about small drill driven duct cleaners
"With a power drill it is a toy." Not necessarily. The work is done by the brush and the shaft; the drill only provides the rotation. For short small ducts that is exactly enough, and Danduct positions the PD4 that way too.
"I don't need extraction for a short run." You do. Dust comes loose even on a short run. Without negative pressure it ends up in the room where you are working.
"One brush is enough for the whole building." Rarely. Ducts differ in diameter and material, and the PD4 brushes are sold separately precisely so you can choose per size. Help with that choice is available under brushes for air ducts.
"Cleaning it yourself replaces all professional maintenance." Not for every installation. Milieu Centraal says that maintenance on the ventilation box with its motor is not something you do yourself. The trade off is explained under cleaning ventilation ducts yourself.
Fictional example: the PD4 at a facilities team
Fictional example: the facilities team of an office building sees dust behind the extract valves of the toilet blocks during the annual round. The branches are short and have a diameter of 125 mm. The team chooses a PD4 with 125 mm brushes, uses its own cordless drill and sets up an extraction unit with HEPA for each toilet block. A separate plan is made for the long main ducts above the corridors.
The example shows where the PD4 adds value: many short sections, quick to set up, without a large machine. How often such a round makes sense is covered under the interval for ventilation duct cleaning.
Requesting a PD4 duct cleaner from Lamers
Lamers supplies the PD4 and the matching brushes. For quick advice, list which diameters you have, how long the runs are, what material the ducts are made of and what kind of dirt is in them. You can then request a quote, ask for a callback or ask a question first. Use request a quotation to go straight to the form.

Frequently asked questions: PD4 duct cleaner
Which power drill do I need for the PD4 duct cleaner?
Danduct states that the PD4 works with a cordless or mains powered drill. Which drill fits the PD4 shaft best, for example in terms of chuck and speed, is best checked with Lamers. Then you know for sure whether your own tool fits or whether you would be better off using a different model.
How long is the shaft of the PD4 duct cleaner?
According to Danduct, the PD4 shaft is 2.5 to 7.5 metres. That makes the PD4 suitable for short runs, such as branches behind a valve. If your inspection openings are further apart or you have long main ducts, the DC4 with a reach of up to 30 metres is a more logical choice.
Which duct diameters can you clean with the Danduct PD4?
Brushes from 100 to 600 mm are available separately for the PD4. So you choose a brush of the right size for each duct. Danduct describes the PD4 as particularly perfect for small ducts. For ducts thinner than 100 mm, the Intelligent Airnozzle is a better option, as it works from 30 mm.
Are brushes included with the PD4 duct cleaner?
According to Danduct, the brushes from 100 to 600 mm are available separately. That is practical, because you only buy the sizes you really need. Danduct supplies soft, standard and more aggressive Tynex brushes. Give Lamers your duct sizes and material for a suitable selection.
What is the difference between the PD4 and the DC4 duct cleaner?
The PD4 runs on a power drill and has a shaft of 2.5 to 7.5 metres. The DC4 has its own 230 volt motor, reaches up to 30 metres, rotates automatically left and right on an adjustable timer and also cleans vertical ducts and 90 degree bends. The PD4 is more compact, the DC4 reaches further.
Do I need extraction when cleaning a short duct with the PD4?
Yes. Dust comes loose even on a short run. Keep the duct section under continuous negative pressure with an extraction unit and use a HEPA filter of 99.97 percent at 0.3 µm if the unit exhausts indoors. Seal other valves with foam caps, so the dirt does not enter the room through another grille.
Is the PD4 suitable for greasy extract ducts in a commercial kitchen?
According to the Eurovent recommendation, wet methods are needed for extract ducts from commercial kitchens, while dry methods are usually sufficient for supply and general extract. The PD4 is a dry brushing method for small ducts. For greasy kitchen ducts, first discuss with Lamers which approach and equipment fit.
Can I use the PD4 to clean residential mechanical ventilation ducts?
The PD4 is made for small ducts, so technically that is obvious. Milieu Centraal advises having extract ducts of mechanical ventilation cleaned at least once every 8 years and says that maintenance on the ventilation box with its motor is not something you do yourself. Lamers supplies professional cleaning equipment for business users.
When do you choose the PD5 instead of the PD4?
According to Danduct, the PD5 is intended for ducts from 80 to 250 mm and has a shaft of 3 to 15 metres. If you mainly have thin ducts with longer runs, that is the difference. The PD5 is mentioned here for comparison. Ask Lamers which version suits your ducts.
What does the PD4 duct cleaner cost?
Lamers does not give a fixed price for the PD4. The total price depends on the shaft length and the number and type of brushes you need. So request a quote and state your duct diameters, run lengths and type of contamination. You can also ask for a callback or ask a question first.
