This page helps facilities teams and maintenance companies in Meierijstad to clean ducts carrying combustible or fine dust safely. You will read what is known about dust explosions and ATEX, why compressed air is a definite no in some rooms and how sealing and extraction stop dust from spreading. Lamers Reinigingstechniek from Zelhem supplies the Danduct Clean equipment for this.

Meierijstad in figures: a production municipality with many villages
Meierijstad has 84,304 inhabitants on 18,400 hectares of land, 458 inhabitants per km2, and ranks 45th of the 342 municipalities (CBS 2024). CBS classifies the municipality as moderately urban, class 3.
| Sector | Establishments | Share | Dust or contamination in the ducts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business services | 2,460 | 21.1% | Office dust |
| Industry and energy | 2,400 | 20.6% | Production dust, sometimes combustible |
| Trade and hospitality | 1,990 | 17.1% | Grease from kitchens |
| Government, education and healthcare | 1,635 | 14.0% | Office and school dust |
| Culture, recreation, other services | 1,215 | 10.4% | Moisture in sports facilities and halls |
| Financial services and real estate | 705 | 6.0% | Office dust |
| Agriculture, forestry and fishing | 650 | 5.6% | Organic dust |
Industry and agriculture together make up 26.2% of the establishments, and industry is almost as large as business services. Duct maintenance in the villages of Meierijstad is therefore closer to the shop floor than in a city of offices.
When does dust in an extraction duct become dangerous?
Fine organic dust such as flour, meal and sugar can explode. A TNO memo states that an explosion is only possible above 60 g/m3 of fine dust in the air. A normally operating room seldom reaches that concentration, but loosening a thick layer of dust inside a duct can create it locally. The same principle applies to woodworking; the literature on dust explosions points to extraction installations, spark detection and ATEX.
| Situation | Risk | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Thin layer of dust, no EX zone | Low | Normal brush cleaning under negative pressure |
| Thick layer of fine organic dust | Local cloud when loosened | Work in sections, extract continuously |
| Room designated as an EX zone | Ignition source is critical | ATEX 114 certified vacuum cleaner |
| Compressed air in a dusty room | Dust is spread | ✗ Do not do it, extract instead of blowing |
Why you do not use compressed air in bakeries and dusty production
The Belgian sector guide for bakers leaves no room for doubt: no compressed air, hand brushes or brooms; use an industrial vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. TNO gives the Dutch bakery sector the same message and adds that an M class filter will do, except in EX zones, where an ATEX 114 certified unit is needed. The Dutch health based recommendation for inhalable wheat flour dust is 0.2 mg/m3 over 8 hours; that is an advisory value, not a legal limit.
For the duct this means: clean with a rotating brush and capture the dust immediately with extraction. A compressed air nozzle is handy inside a duct, but in a room with fine flour dust only if the duct is fully sealed and under negative pressure. More about this sector can be read under extraction in the bakery.
Duct cleaning Meierijstad: sealing, negative pressure and filtration
The core of safe cleaning is that loosened dust can go nowhere except to the extraction unit. Every section being cleaned stays under negative pressure the whole time, and if the unit exhausts indoors, a HEPA filter with 99.97% at 0.3 µm is required. Danduct supplies inflatable duct plugs to close off a duct section and foam caps to seal valves and diffusers. Everything about this is under negative pressure HEPA extraction for businesses.
- Determine the type of dust and check whether the room is an EX zone.
- Close off the run with a balloon at one end.
- Connect the extraction unit at the other end and build up negative pressure.
- Seal all valves in the production area.
- Clean with the brush towards the extraction, in short lengths where layers are thick.
- Check with a camera and record the result.
Which brushing machine for production ducts in the villages?
For long extraction runs in production halls, the Danduct Clean DC4 fits, with a reach of up to 30 metres in ducts of 100 to 600 mm and brushes of 0.6 or 0.9 mm polypropylene. For short branches at a machine or in a canteen, the PD4 on a power drill is often enough. Ducts wider than 600 mm are outside the range of both; ask for advice in that case. You can compare duct cleaning kits explained to see all the options. For the broader industrial approach there is a page on factory ductwork cleaning.
Fictional example: a food producer with a flour silo and an office
A fictional food producer in one of the villages has a production room with flour dust, extraction above the mixers and an office with mechanical ventilation. The facilities team cleans the office ducts dry with a brush. The mixer extraction is tackled in sections, with a balloon at one end, a HEPA extraction unit at the other and all valves in the production room sealed. Compressed air is not used in the production room at all. Fictional example without a real client or measurements.
The lesson from this example is to treat the two systems in one building as two separate jobs. The office can follow a simple routine, while the production extraction gets its own preparation, its own checklist and its own record of what was found.

Frequently asked questions: air duct cleaning Meierijstad
How many production companies does Meierijstad have according to CBS?
In 2024 CBS counted 2,400 establishments in industry and energy in Meierijstad, 20.6% of the 11,660 business establishments. That makes industry almost as large as business services (21.1%). Together with agriculture (5.6%), this amounts to 26.2% of the establishments.
May you clean ducts with compressed air in a bakery in Meierijstad?
Preferably not in the room itself. The Belgian sector guide and TNO advise against compressed air, hand brushes and brooms and recommend an industrial vacuum cleaner with a HEPA or M class filter. Clean the duct with a rotating brush while it is sealed and under negative pressure, so that no flour dust enters the bakery.
When can flour dust in a duct in Meierijstad explode?
According to TNO, a dust explosion is only possible above 60 g/m3 of fine dust such as flour, meal or sugar. When a thick layer of dust is loosened, that concentration can occur locally. So work in short lengths, extract continuously and check beforehand whether the room is an EX zone.
Which vacuum cleaner do you need in an EX zone in Meierijstad?
According to TNO, an industrial vacuum cleaner with ATEX 114 certification is essential in EX zones. Outside EX zones, a unit with an M class filter is sufficient for flour dust. If the extraction unit exhausts indoors during duct cleaning, a HEPA filter with 99.97% at 0.3 µm is the standard.
How do you seal off a production duct in Meierijstad during cleaning?
Use an inflatable duct plug to close off one end of the run. At the other end you connect the extraction unit, so the duct comes under negative pressure. Valves and diffusers in the production room are sealed with foam caps. That way loosened dust can only go to the extraction.
Which limit applies to flour dust in a bakery in Meierijstad?
The Dutch health based recommendation for inhalable wheat flour dust is 0.2 mg/m3 as an 8 hour average. That is an advisory value, not a statutory limit. In Belgium a limit of 0.5 mg/m3 applies. Clean extraction ducts help keep exposure as low as possible.
Which machine suits long extraction ducts in a factory in Meierijstad?
The Danduct Clean DC4 reaches up to 30 metres in round and square ducts of 100 to 600 mm, including vertical runs and 90 degree bends. For short branches the PD4 on a power drill can be enough. If the ducts are wider than 600 mm, ask Lamers for advice.
How urban is Meierijstad according to CBS?
In 2024 CBS classifies Meierijstad as moderately urban, class 3. The municipality has 84,304 inhabitants on 18,400 hectares of land, 458 inhabitants per square kilometre. Companies are spread across the villages, which makes a mobile set with sealing and extraction equipment practical.
How do you stop dust from a duct falling into a production room in Meierijstad?
Keep the duct under continuous negative pressure while you clean, seal the valves in the room and clean towards the extraction unit. With thick layers of dust you work in short lengths. Afterwards, check with a camera that the run is clean before you open the valves again.
Can I have equipment from Lamers delivered to Meierijstad?
Yes. Lamers Reinigingstechniek is based in Zelhem and supplies equipment to companies throughout the Netherlands, including the villages of Meierijstad. You can request a quotation, ask a question or request a callback. Lamers does not carry out duct cleaning itself; that is done by your own people or a specialist.
